Since Adolf Busch (*1891) lived and worked during, among other times, the "golden" 1920s, I drew strong inspiration from the decorative, geometric elements of the graphic and type design of that era. My design aimed to capture the spirit of that time and connect it with the celebratory concert in the 21st century.
Specifically for the anniversary, I developed a typeface inspired by
Art Deco. The greatest challenge was to bridge elegance and opulence
while walking the line between professionalism and approachability –
values that are important to the musicians of the BuschKollegium.
Therefore, I constructed the "BuschDisplay" font by hand.
Imperfect lines provide a natural, likeable, and personal look,
despite the noble-looking, graphic Art Deco elements.
In addition to the characteristic, playful display font, I
developed another typeface with narrow, hand-drawn glyphs, the
"BuschSans". The "BuschSans" manages to create a connection between
the Poppins Regular for body text and the delicate "BuschDisplay".
As the central element of the program booklet cover, I illustrated a
violin scroll that directly references the composer and violinist
Adolf Busch.
Turned upside down: During the COVID-19 pandemic,
this represented the reality of life for many musicians, as their
livelihood was only allowed to take place with restrictions. Even at
the time of the anniversary concert toward the end of the pandemic,
the musicians didn't know weeks in advance whether they would be able
and allowed to play.
The program booklet contains personal texts, histories, and reports from a total of thirteen authors. To ensure the brochure didn't become a tiring wall of text, I decided to break up the texts with illustrations and many images.
In addition to the program booklet, I designed matching promotional flyers and online announcements for the website with all important information and links to ticket sales. Posters that were displayed throughout the Karlsruhe area were also part of the package and sparked curiosity about the summer concert.
