War in 13 Frames

Illustrated GIF on Ukraine War News

As part of an illustration course, I took the opportunity to depict a significant moment from Russian live television in a small animated GIF. It is based on a scene in which Marina Ovsyannikova, an employee of the Russian broadcaster Channel1, holds up a banner with anti-war statements to the camera while a news program is being broadcast live.

In the GIF, the protester is brought to the ground by security personnel and the screen is painted black. This leaves it up to the viewers to imagine what consequences it might have in a country like Russia — which censors media and is described as an autocracy — to freely express one's opinion and demonstrate.

First, I drew the 13 frames by hand, then scanned them, edited them digitally, and added the bright red background color.
